For this work I have painted the nipples of 35 friends. At what point does a nipple begin to carry the sexual and cultural connotations that make it subject to censorship? Is it still a ‘female' nipple if the person no longer considers themselves female? What if their nipple used to be anatomically male? Is a non-binary person’s nipple acceptable for public display? What if they’ve had a mastectomy? Ultimately every nipple is genderless, until it isn’t.
