As I paint this self-portrait, I am preparing for a double mastectomy in six weeks. I typically remain hyper-focused while I paint; however, while working on this portrait, I find myself daydreaming about the many possibilities of the future—contemplating how my gender expression and artistic practice might evolve post-op. I have always viewed and experienced gender as a mutable concept (it’s all made up, after all), which is why I’ve spent over a decade exploring and painting diverse forms of gender and identity expression within my queer community. As I say farewell to my breasts, I honour their presence on my journey thus far, and I embrace the future with hope and anticipation.

This pose is a reference to an 1841 watercolour painting entitled ‘Mrs Prince after surgical removal of a breast’. Artist unknown.
