Filtered Self-Portrait with the Family Llama is a portrait of grief, guardianship and belonging. Reba McEntire, Leutwyler Ranch’s fierce and tender protector, passed last year. I was raised in the American southwest, so desert has always felt like home. Not empty or barren, but a site of transformation and survival that mirrors my own experience. Painted after a desert hiking trip through Western Australia in 2025, this work carries the residue of that landscape, its heat, stillness, and ancient familiarity. Reba earned her legendary name. This painting is how I hold her.
